Welcome to the Spinder website. The purpose of this site is collecting and presenting the history and genealogy of the Spinder family, sharing interesting stories and bringing the family together. Related families also discussed are: Nicolai, Alma, Schievink, Kooistra, Weening, Bosklopper, Veenstra, Elzinga, Pitstra, Mozes, Iwema, Aylva and several others. 
Harkema / De Harkema, 4283 inhabitants, used to be a long village in the 17th/18th century "Harkema-Opeynde". Somehow this village disappeared, but south of it appeared a settlement on the heather-fields, with very simple dwellings. This settlement became the village of Harkema-Opeinde, later renamed to Harkema. The inhabitants are known to be a little rough but religious; its soccer-team Harkemase Boys (Never On Sunday!) is a feared adversary and just became champion in their Saturday first-class league.
Adriana was born Arjaantje Terpstra on 23 June 1897 in Hantum, Westdongeradeel, Friesland, The Neherlands. She arrived on Ellis Island on 19 June 1919 with the SS Nieuw Amsterdam together with her parents Harold and Hilda Terpstra and her youngest brother Isaak. She writes in her memoires how she went to Denver and lived with reverent Van Dellen and his familie as a housekeeper. About 1922 she married Wessel (Wesley) Spinder and became the mother of all Frisian-American Spinders. Adriana passed away on 2 February 1990.
